Golf Alignment
When aligning (or addressing) to the ball, you should
always think "square." "Square" means that you have an almost perfect
90º angle set between your feet and the ball, your shoulders and the
ball, and the club and your body. The importance of this is extremely
crucial to your shot, for it determines the path of your ball. To be
square, your stance must be correct. Click here to see The Stance. You
also should be square to the target that you’re aiming for, that is
the true point of alignment.
Place the club perpendicular to your thighs, pointing the club towards
your target. Now you are properly aligned to your target.
A good drill to use anywhere is to take three clubs and set them up on
the ground as shown above. This creates perfect 90º angles between
your feet, the club, and your target. Use this drill to get a feel of
how to set up to your target.
Make sure that the club that is perpendicular to your body is pointed
towards your target. Try and envision the three clubs while playing on
the course, and it should help you straighter shots.
